RSPB Big Schools Bird Watch Survey Results

The RSPB has just published the results of its Big Schools Bird Watch Survey. The survey, which took place during the last two weeeks of January, encouraged schools to spend 1 hour bird watching and to record the birds that came into their playgrounds.

Top of the list of birds that were spotted was the blackbird, followed by the starling and wood pigeon. The numbers recorded were lower than last year, probably because of the very cold weather.

The male blackbird is an easy bird for children to identify with its bright orange beak. If you are interested in bird watching with youngsters, our Field Guide – Birds, at £4.99 will help you identify the 50 most common garden birds (it's wipe clean too so practical for outdoor use!). Children’s binoculars start from £5.95, with higher specification binoculars at £11.95.
