walking with babies and toddlers

Posted on January 23rd, 2012

Walking with babies and toddlers can be easier than with older children, as they will be in a child carrier so no complaints about aching legs! However there is still the possibility that they will get fed up, so don’t be over ambitious for the first few outings – it’s best to quit while you are ahead and all go home happy.

If you are planning on walking with babies and toddlers, make sure you invest in a decent child carrier. It will make walking with the extra load much easier for you, and your child will be more comfortable and happy (which means a more enjoyable outing for all!).

Also remember that while you may be generating a good sweat, your toddler isn’t moving so exposure is a risk (we know of someone who thought their child was a bit quiet, turned around and discovered they were looking more blue then pink). It can happen quickly, so check your child regularly (especially if they have dropped off to sleep). They need to be dressed in plenty of warm childrens clothing (an all in one is usually the best as these often have integrated mittens and bootees which prevent them getting lost). Likewise, in Summer make sure they are well protected from the sun.

An emergency shelter such as a bothy bag should be an essential piece of kit. They can be used for lunchtime stops if the weather is a bit grim (with the added bonus of keeping children all in one place!) or used at feeding time to keep off the wind.
